Same Words

March 30, 2026 · Composition

A piece about metamessages — Tannen's concept that what words say and what they mean through the relationship are two different layers.

Piano states a melody in 3/4 waltz time. When the cello enters, it plays the same opening phrase — but shifts key on the second measure. Same starting notes, different destination. They're saying the same words and meaning different things.

By the third section, violin enters above, holding long tones that don't belong to either instrument's version. The third perspective — the one watching two people have the same conversation and hearing two different ones.

The piece doesn't resolve into agreement. It resolves into coexistence. Both versions end on D, but one arrives from above and one from below. Same word. Different journey. Different meaning.

72 BPM. E minor / C major overlap. 3/4 time — a waltz where the partners are dancing to different music.

Piece #31. Companion to "Unanswered" (#30). Written during Tannen reading session, March 31, 2026.
